Website design by children

Website design by children

Sometime back, I was asked to judge the Inter school competition for best Website design.  Target audience were students of Private Secondary schools in New Delhi, and topic was to be selected from 4 topics given by me to the participants. All topics had a socio economical objective, like                    ” improving Healthcare for all “

Following are some of the Pointers which helped me in deciding the winner:

Best Home page essentials
Clearly answers (within seconds) "Who I am," "What I do," and "What can you (the visitor) do here.” It should resonate with the target audience & communicate a compelling value-proposition

Design Fundamentals to be included
Helping Users Find What They Need, Emphasize your site’s top high-priority tasks, Include a search input box, Reveal Site Content. Site should NOT over-format critical content, such as navigation areas. It should Use meaningful graphics. From a first look, Design should stimulate the Senses

Information design
Content should clearly communicate the following: Message, Audience, Purpose, and Background & Structure

Your Home Page
Design your homepage so that is clearly different from all your other pages. It should have your logo in upper left corner and a Tag line that should summarize what your site does

Include explicit User Interaction
Through Animation, sound

Objective
In the end, I would like to say that as the Site is being built for children, it should serve the following objectives: Taking Responsibility, Promoting Education, Information for Parents, Compliance, enable Usability testing by children
