Role played
by a project manager in taking the project from its initiating stage till the
closing stage
A Project Manager is like a father of a project. He is
responsible from the starting to maturity to end like a true father to his
Project. Specific responsibilities are given below:
1.The Project Manager is the person responsible for
managing the project.
2. Initiate, Plan, Monitor & control, Execute
and Close are the six stages of a Project.
3 He is responsible for accomplishing the project
objectives within the constraints of the project. He is responsible for the
outcome(success or failure) of the project. He is involved with the planning,
controlling and monitoring, and also managing and directing the assigned
project resources to best meet project objectives.
4.The Project Manager controls and monitors “triple
constraints”—project scope, time and cost. He is also responsible for ensuring
the Quality of the Project and must have clear understanding of the customers
Quality and Acceptance criteria.
4.The Project Manager examines the organizational
culture and determines whether project management is recognized as a valid role
with accountability and authority for managing the project.
6.The Project Manager collects metrics data(such as
baseline, actual values for costs, schedule, work in progress, and work
completed) & reports on project progress and other project specific
information to stakeholders.
7.The Project Manager is responsible for
identifying, monitoring, and responding to risk.
8.The Project Manager is responsible to the project
stakeholders for delivering a project’s objectives within scope, schedule,
cost, and quality.
9. Documentation is an important part of the
project Managers responsibility and so is Communication at 3 levels - to the
internal Team, to the customer and to the stakeholders. The 3 elements of a
Project’s success are, Communication, Communication and Communication.
10. Phasing the Project into Phases , according a
Work breakdown Schedule (WBS) and using an effective PM Tool like MS Project
are an essential part of the work after the initial planning, budgeting and
Project kick off . Regular monitoring of the activities, with a lens focus on
the critical activities ( the PM Tool will show you the Critical activities)
are like eating food (daily habits ) for a Project Manager.
11. Team management, conflict resolution are a part
and parcel of the jobs of a PM.
12.The reporting structure of a Project Manager
changes depends on organizational structure. In smaller organizations, he may report
to a C.E.O in larger organizations he may report to a C.I.O or Vice President
(Tech).
